Paid vs Free Volatility Indicators on TradingView

The difference between paid and free volatility indicators is not price; it is whether a tested claim comes attached. Free built-ins such as Bollinger Bands, Keltner Channels and ATR are well documented and widely used. A paid indicator earns its price only if it adds something the free tools do not, and that something should be checkable.

What separates them?

What can separate them is a stated, published coverage claim, because the free built-ins describe volatility without attaching a measured containment rate.

Free built-ins Paid, tested range (BTM)
Space Price (Bollinger, Keltner, ATR) Return
Claim Nominal, e.g. ~95% for ±2σ Measured: ~71% inner, ~94% outer
Published evidence Textbook definitions Working paper, Proof page with misses
Cost Included Paid, 30-day free trial

The measured shortfall of default settings is covered in how accurate Bollinger Bands are: a standard (20, 2) price-space band covered 82.64% of next closes in the paper's comparison, against 94.00% for the outer band here. Past behavior is not a guarantee of future results.

When does a free indicator do the job?

A free indicator does the job whenever its nominal description is all that is needed, such as reading typical bar size with ATR or a squeeze in band width. Nothing here suggests those uses require a paid tool.

What does neither prove?

Neither proves profit. The paper validates calibration, not the profitability of any use, and whether a use delivers value after costs is an open question. The Behavioral Transform Model also runs narrow at crisis onset, with containment near 65%.

Frequently asked questions

Are TradingView's built-in bands accurate?

They are accurate to their definitions, but their nominal coverage can differ from measured coverage. A (20, 2) Bollinger band covers about 95% only under assumptions that price data do not meet.

‍

Can a free indicator be tested the same way?

Yes. Count how often the next close lands inside the range and compare with the stated rates. Count how often the next close lands inside the range and compare with the stated rate. How to backtest a band indicator shows the steps.

‍

Does paying remove the need to check?

No. The same checks apply to any indicator, as laid out in how to compare band indicators.
